India’s Rotation Strategy Gains Support from Veteran Pacer Ahead of World Cup

India’s strategic rotation of their fast bowling contingent in preparation for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 has received backing from a seasoned pace bowler within the squad.

Since the commencement of the Asia Cup, India has implemented a rotational policy among their seamers, allowing only a couple of the trio comprising Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, and Mohammed Shami to feature in the playing XI simultaneously.

This strategy has also paved the way for medium-pacer Shardul Thakur, known for his batting prowess, to secure more opportunities. However, it has subsequently limited the chances for India’s established fast bowlers, notably Mohammed Shami, who participated in just two Asia Cup matches. Despite his impactful performance, including a decisive five-wicket haul in the first ODI against Australia at Mohali, Shami’s position in the XI remains uncertain due to the rotational approach.

Speaking at a press conference following India’s recent victory, Shami expressed his support for the rotational policy, emphasizing the importance of comprehending individual roles within the team, irrespective of inclusion in the playing XI.

“In cricket, it’s crucial to comprehend the team’s requirements. Not everyone can consistently secure a spot in the playing XI due to various combinations and necessities of the game,” said Shami. “Accepting one’s role, whether on the field or on the bench, holds significant importance.”

Shami further indicated that the outcomes suggested the effectiveness of the rotational strategy before the World Cup and stressed the value it provides in offering game time to all players.

“The team management’s strategy of rotation based on conditions, situations, and opposition is working well,” stated Shami. “The recent performances showcase its effectiveness. Before a major tournament, managing the workload of pacers becomes crucial.”

He highlighted the advantages, especially for bowlers struggling with form, asserting that such a policy offers them the much-needed match practice to regain their rhythm.

“Rotation aids bowlers who may be out of rhythm, providing them with valuable game exposure,” Shami remarked.

Discussing India’s batting prowess in the recent Mohali encounter, where World Cup-bound Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Suryakumar Yadav excelled, Shami suggested that such displays against formidable opponents enhance team confidence ahead of the World Cup.

“Strong performances against quality oppositions boost confidence, particularly before a major event,” he added. “A synchronized effort from both the batting and bowling units is crucial for optimal preparation.”

India is set to play two warm-up matches against England and Netherlands respectively, following the ongoing ODI series, before commencing their World Cup journey against Australia in Chennai on October 8.
