Galley Marvels’ Nail-Biting Win Over Colombo Strikers: LPL is Getting Excited

In a thrilling match held at Pallekele International Stadium on 3rd July, Galle Marvels, transformed from Galle Titans, secured a close-margin win of 7 runs against Colombo Strikers in the 5th match of the 5th Edition of Lankan Premier League.

This narrowed the differences in the point table and led to another exciting cricket tournament just after the T20 World Cup 2024! With this win, Galle Marvels kept the momentum with two consecutive wins and ranked themselves at the top of the points table, while Colombo Strikers are in second position even with better NRR but fewer points!

Before The Game Starts

In the franchise league of five teams, each team faces the four opponents two times on the league stage, where the venues are selected on a home and away basis. Before the Qualifier and Eliminator selection matches, there are 20 games to be played. Thus, every team wants to reach the top two; if not possible, at least within the top four, the fifth team will automatically be eliminated in the group stage.

Galle Marvels was in good form after beating Jaffna Kings, the three-time champion, in the first match. Colombo Strikers was also in a comfortable position with a 51-run win against the Kandy Falcons in their first game.

How the Match Went on

Colombo Strikers, led by Thisara Perera, won the toss and elected to bat first. This time, Bangladeshi Star Taskin Ahmed was not in the squad.

Galle Marvels Struggle to Get a Good Total

Niroshan Dickwella, captain of Galle Marvels, opened the innings with Alex Hales, the English explosive batter. However, the opening partnership didn’t last long, as Alex Hales went after scoring only 14 runs from 15 balls. Nirshan Dickwella, on the other hand, continued attacking the bowlers and ended up scoring 50 runs in just 18 balls, one of the quickest fifties in LPL!

Tim Seifert went soon after Alex’s dismissal. Immediately after that, Bhanuka Rajapaksha was dismissed for a runout, and the Galle Marvels fell into deep trouble to put a total fight on the board even after the brilliant fifty on Nirshan. The problem got even more profound when they lost the wicket of Dwaine Pretorius (5 of 7 balls).

When most batters failed to perform their jobs, the captain’s 50 of just 18 balls earlier and Sahan’s 35 of 27 balls carried the innings that far. Finally, Isuru Udana’s quick fifty, scoring 52 of 34 balls, saved the Marvels, who scored 179 and lost nine wickets.

Colombo Strikers had to use seven bowlers in this innings, where Chamika Karunaratne cost 37 runs in just two overs. Binura Fernando impressed with his ball, as he got three crucial wickets for just 22 runs, and Shadab Khan joined him with four wickets for just 21 runs, saving the team from a massive target! Though Pathirana took one wicket, he was as expensive as the others, with 37 runs in 4 overs!

Colombo Strikers After a Steady Start to Chase of 179

Considering the pitch situation, the score of 179 was not easy to chase. Yet Rahmatullah Gurbaz, their Afghan star and a successful name in another franchise tournament like IPL, started well but couldn’t carry it for long. After Shevon Daniel’s quick dismissal (7 of 6 balls), his wicket, scoring 29 of 17 balls, caused the Strikers to get into trouble!

Unlike the Marvels, Colombo Striker batters were doing well, and most reached the two-digit mark with the bat. Unfortunately, they couldn’t carry the innings, and the Strikers lost their wickets at regular intervals. Thisara Perera, the captain, failed to contribute with the bat and scored 18 runs in 14 balls.

Dunith Wellage’s Fight Back

When Glen Philips and Dunith Wellalage tried to charge the bowlers, Sahan Arachchige, the 28-year-old Sri Lankan bowler, sent Glen Philips off for 26 of 18 runs. Dunith’s struggle started here as there were few reliable ones on the other side supporting him for more than five remaining overs! Yet, he scored two consecutive boundaries in that very over and kept the run rolling.  The next over didn’t go well, and at the end of 16 overs, the Colombo Strikers needed 50 runs from only 24 balls!

Dunith didn’t give up till the end. In the 17th over, he got 13 runs from Karunaratne, letting Galle Marvels know they were still in the game! But Isuru Udana’s tight 18th over made it difficult for them again. While Karunaratne was looking good to support Dunith, his unfortunate runout in the next over narrowed the chance for Strikers.

The Last Over Drama

At the end of the 19th Over, Colombo Strikers scored 164 runs with the cost of 8 wickets. Yet, Dunith Wellalage was on strike, and scoring 16 runs in the last over was not impossible. But it was the last over Isuru Udana, the most successful one, while Theekshana in the non-strike end was unreliable for Dunith.

When he failed to score any run for consecutive three balls, the match was almost out of hand as they needed 16 runs from just three balls for this. Yet, a massive six on the 4th ball restored hope for them and resulted in a new equation of 10 runs in 2 balls! However, his only two runs in the 5th ball assured the Galle Marvels of another win!

Udana didn’t make any mistake in the last ball and got the wicket of Dunith Wellage in the last ball of the innings, and Galle Marvels celebrated the thrilling win of 7 runs where Dunith Wellage remained the tragic hero of the match.

Match Summary

So, here is the match in brief:

Galle Marvels: 179/ 10 (20.00 Overs)

Colombo Strikers: 172/8 (20.00 Overs)

Player of the Match: Isuru Udana for his all-round performance!

Some Final Thoughts

Though Dunith Wellage’s job remained unfinished, his 45 of just 26 balls sends a message to the team that he can take such responsibility if someone from the other end supports him well. Besides, the match went to the last ball, and they lost by seven runs only, which helped them save the NRR while losing the point.

Sri Lankans are happy, as Isuru Udana from Galle and Dunith from Colombo are both from Sri Lanka and have performed brilliantly. Let’s see how these teams perform in the next matches and how they end this season of the Lankan Premier League.
