I Am Ready To Bat Anywhere – Shamim Patwary
Bangladesh lower-middle order batter Shamim Hossain said that it would be better for him if he could bat up in the order as it would allow him to play a long innings. At the same time the left hander acknowledged that he couldn’t play his best as of yet that was expected from him adding that he is eying to improvise his strike rate. The 23-year-old who is featuring for the Rangpur Riders spoke at length with Kriknews.
Here are the excerpts:
Q. Could you play as per your potential as of yet since the inception of your international career?
Shamim: I am content with my last year’s performance as I could produce a few laudable shows l in the four to five matches on the trot.
Q. In the T2oIs your existing strike rate is 115.98 and the type of batter you are, I mean the fire power you possess, does it suit your character?
Shamim: Of course not but at the same time I also have to understand the situation of my team; like in which order I am batting. And the matches I have played well, my side was suffering from the batting collapse but came back thanks to my performances. However, I think that my strike rate is a bit low.
Q. Actually you have to play the role of a finisher. How efficiently could you do that until now?
Shamim: In fact, I need to get more opportunities in order to do that. But it is also true that I have just started with my career. Therefore I would need to play more games.
Q. You have only played in the ODIs and T20Is as of yet. Do you feel any enthusiasm featuring in the Tests as well?
Shamim: Why not? I also played well in last year’s NCL [National Cricket League]. I have a desire to play across formats of the game.
Q. Many of the Bangladesh national team members were found reluctant to feature in Test cricket. Do you feel that they need to be enthusiastic to play in the longer version of the game for the betterment of the cricket of this nation?
Shamim: To be honest, I enjoy playing Test cricket a lot. I also like it. Earlier, I was a bit unwilling for the format. But I have changed my mind. In fact I feel well playing Tests. I enjoy it very much.
Q. With the ICC T20 World Cup in mind, BPL is being considered as an ideal platform of build-up for the upcoming global event. How instrumental it will be for you since you could hit 34 as highest thus far?
Shamim: I would say it [preparation] is average. Nevertheless I think I need to perform better. However, we are just in the middle of the tournament and we have a lot more games to go. I hope to do well if I get opportunities. Perhaps you have noticed that I didn’t bat in the last match. Even in the past game I also didn’t get the chance to play enough balls.
Q. Do you think of bat up in the order?
Shamim: I always remain prepared to bat at any position. And how am I as a batter? I hope you all know that. I am used to bats at any order. I don’t have any problem. But if I can bat up in the order I would get a bit more time to settle for a long stay in the crease. It is always difficult to arrange an innings when you bat in the lower order. And I think the people involved with the technical issues should think about this.
Q. Do you think Rangpur Riders could perform better as a team if Shakib was fully fit?
Shamim: Of course it is. Although we are going well despite his eye issues, however, if he is around the dressing room, we would feel more confident.
Q. How easy going would it be for Rangpur to continue the ongoing momentum?
Shamim: Definitely, we have just become set in the competition. We hope to do something well.
