South Africa Dealt a Blow as Key Pacers Nortje and Magala Ruled Out of CWC23 Due to Injuries
South Africa’s aspirations for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup have been marred by a significant setback as Anrich Nortje and Sisanda Magala have been deemed unfit for the tournament following a failed fitness evaluation.
The absence of Nortje, initially named in the 15-member squad, is particularly disheartening for South Africa. Known for his pace and previous experience in Indian conditions, his unavailability poses a substantial challenge for the Proteas in their quest for a maiden Cricket World Cup triumph.
Nortje’s recent struggles emerged during the home series against Australia. He missed the first ODI due to rest after the T20Is but managed to participate in the second ODI. Unfortunately, he had to exit the game after delivering just five overs and was subsequently ruled out of the series following scans on his condition.
In response to these setbacks, Andile Phehlukwayo and Lizaad Williams have been called in as replacements. Phehlukwayo demonstrated his prowess with both bat and ball during the series against Australia, claiming crucial wickets and showcasing a brilliant batting display in the series decider.
Despite the absence of Nortje and Magala, South Africa’s pace battery remains formidable, spearheaded by Kagiso Rabada, with the support of Marco Jansen, Lungi Ngidi, and Gerald Coetzee.
While experienced left-arm quick Wayne Parnell was omitted from the initial 15 due to injury concerns, head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over the absence of Nortje and Magala, acknowledging their significant contributions to the squad. He offered his support for their recovery and return to competitive action.
Walter also expressed confidence in the replacements, Andile and Lizaad, highlighting their skills and recent contributions to the team, as they join the 15-player squad for the World Cup.
South Africa’s campaign in the World Cup is set to begin against Sri Lanka in Delhi on 7 October. The Proteas are hopeful that despite these setbacks, their squad remains strong and capable of making a mark in the tournament.
