Shanto Appointed As Bangladesh Cricket Captain Across All Formats, Taking Over From Shakib
Left-handed opener Najmul Hossain Shanto has been appointed as the new captain of the Bangladesh national cricket team across all formats, taking over from Shakib Al Hasan in at least one format. The decision was announced by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan Papon, who is also the sports minister, following the board’s first meeting of the year on Monday.
Nazmul Hasan stated that Shanto will lead Bangladesh in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is for at least the duration of this year. This decision contrasts with earlier indications from BCB’s cricket operations chairman, Jalal Yunus, who had suggested during the recent home series against New Zealand that Shakib would remain as captain.
Shanto’s appointment as T20I captain may come as a surprise, considering Shakib’s regular presence in the format for Bangladesh. However, Nazmul Hasan explained that factors such as Shakib’s ongoing eyesight issues, coupled with upcoming series against Sri Lanka and the looming World Cup, influenced the decision to appoint a new captain for stability.
The BCB president expressed optimism that this change would aid smooth preparations for the World Cup. Shanto has demonstrated his leadership abilities in Shakib’s absence and has expressed a desire for a longer stint as captain. He has a successful record, having led Bangladesh to victories in various formats, including ODIs, T20Is, and Tests, and has previous leadership experience as captain of the Bangladesh U-19 team.
The position of vice-captain is still open, with several names under consideration. The BCB president suggested that Bangladesh might have different vice-captains for the Test and ODI formats. Shanto’s first assignment as full-time captain will be the home series against Sri Lanka, featuring three T20Is, three ODIs, and two Tests, to be played at venues in Sylhet and Chattogram.
