Rangpur Reach BPL Playoffs
Table toppers Rangpur Riders confirmed for the playoffs of ongoing Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) 2024 after beating hosts Chattogram Challengers by 18 runs in a nail-biting match at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram on Friday night.
They also became the first team to qualify for playoffs in the ongoing 10th BPL.
Electing to bat first, Rangpur scored 187-8 in the stipulated 20 overs, courtesy of their ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan’s brilliant 62 off 39 balls.
Mahedi Hasan made a quick-fire 34 off 17 balls while opener Rony Talukdar and Shamim Hossain added 25 and 17 runs respectively.
Chattogram all-rounder Romario Shepherd claimed 3-27 while Saluddin Sakil and Shohidul Islam took two wickets each.
In response, the hosts faced the wrath of Rangpur pacer Dwaine Pretorius’s bowling as he took three early wickets to reduce them to 32-3.
Tom Bruce and Shuvagata Hom were dismissed after making 24 and 21 runs respectively but Shepherd struck an unbeaten 66 off 30 balls in the later part of the innings to extend their scoreboard to 169-6 in their 20 overs.
Apart from Pretorious’s 3-14, Mahedi also took two wickets for Rangpur.
Rangpur remained on top of the points table with 14 points while Chattogram remained in the fifth position with 10 points.
On Saturday, Fortune Barishal took on Sylhet Strikers at 1:30 pm while Chattogram hosted Durdanto Dhaka at 6:30 pm.
