Rahul Dravid Stands by Suryakumar Yadav Despite ODI Form Concerns Ahead of CWC23

Amid the upcoming ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, India’s head coach, Rahul Dravid, offered unwavering support for Suryakumar Yadav, addressing concerns surrounding the batter’s performances in the ODI format.

Suryakumar, known for his prominence in T20s and holding the top spot in ICC Men’s T20I Batting Rankings, has faced scrutiny due to his modest displays in the 50-over format. Despite 27 ODIs, his batting average stands at 24.41, causing doubts about his suitability for the World Cup.

Emphasizing the team’s confidence in Suryakumar, Dravid highlighted the decision to include him in the World Cup squad, asserting that they stand firmly behind him due to his unique abilities and potential to be a game-changer in the middle order.

Acknowledging Suryakumar’s impact in T20s, Dravid expressed optimism about his potential to adapt and improve in ODIs, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming series against Australia as an opportunity for him to enhance his form and acclimatize to the 50-over format.

Dravid, while confirming the squad’s stance on Suryakumar’s inclusion, mentioned that they would provide him with adequate opportunities in the upcoming ODIs to further evolve as a one-day cricketer.

Despite Suryakumar’s recent struggles against Australia earlier this year, Dravid expressed hope that the series would serve as a platform for Suryakumar to solidify his place in India’s final World Cup starting XI.

Moreover, Dravid highlighted the strategy for the series against Australia, indicating their intent to trial players in positions they are anticipated to feature in during the World Cup. Additionally, he pointed out Ishan Kishan’s versatility, considering his ability to bat both in the middle order and at the top, offering valuable flexibility to the team.

Dravid also addressed the challenge of finding genuine all-rounders in modern ODI cricket, citing the difficulties for part-time bowlers due to rule changes, with an emphasis on teams preferring specialized bowlers or batters over dual-role players.

While affirming the continuous efforts to develop all-rounders within the team, Dravid underlined the complexities in nurturing such talents, given the evolving dynamics of the game and the strategic demands imposed by the format’s regulations.
