Moeen Ali was born on 18 June 1987 in Birmingham, England, to a working-class family with a severe passion for cricket. His dad used to work as a cab driver and a psychiatric nurse. Moeen was first exposed to playing cricket by his cousins, one of whom is Kabir Ali, who also played professional cricket later.

His career in professional cricket started when he was just 15 when he signed up for Warwickshire. That made an impact on his half-century within just two games. He marked his first-class debut in 2005 against Cambridge University, establishing himself as an impressive batsman for the first time.

Moeen started his international career with England in 2014. His ODI debut was on February 28, 2014, in the West Indies, while his Test debut came against Sri Lanka, followed by a T20I. Moeen made an impressive introduction to Test cricket during his first series, scoring 106 runs and invaluable wickets. The all-around performance immediately made him the sports news headlines and signaled the cricket world about someone promising to keep a long career.

Moeen Ali has been the All-rounder, scoring 3094 runs in innings played in 118 with an average of 28.12, which is impressive. As a batter, he has scored 2355 runs in 112 innings, which has resulted in an average of 24.77, a good one as an allrounder. In ODI cricket, he is always a tough guy against India, scoring the most runs, 392, in just 17 matches against them. 

When he started his career, T20 cricket had already begun to catch the attention of global cricket. According to his type, he was thought to be one of the most impactful players for T20, and he also proved it. In 92 matches, he has scored 1229 runs with an average of 21.18 runs, which is excellent for T20 cricket. His highest was against Australia, the biggest rival of England, where he scored 72 runs! As a bowler, he has taken 51 wickets in 92 T20 Innings, which shows his impact on the team.

  • T20 World Cup 2022: After 2019, this time, England again showed their brilliance and broke the deadlock! To win the first-ever T20 World Cup, Moeen Ali played one of the most vital roles. 
  • Among many performances, his brilliance as a captain against West Indies in 2022 was remarkable in recent times. In a five-match T20 series, he took charge in the 4th match and scored 63 runs from just 28 balls! With this win, England leveled the series by 2-2, and Moeen marked his first win as a captain! 

Why Moeen Ali Decided to Leave Cricket?

With age and the advent of new players, the chances of impacting Moeen Ali were lower. Lastly, he was out of the squad in the series against Australia, which paved the way for this decision. Unfortunately, a player like him couldn’t get the farewell from the field. With this decision, his T20 match against India in the Semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2024 remained his last international appearance! 

In an interview, he said he still can hold on and keep trying to get a place in the squad, yet he doesn’t want to for that at this age. He wants to be honest with himself.
