Mahmud Backs Najmul Ahead Of Mashrafee As Strikers Leader

Durdanto Dhaka’s head coach Khaled Mahmud said on Thursday that he is surprised seeing Sylhet Sixers opting for Mohammad Mithun instead of across format skipper Najmul Hossain to lead them in absence Mashrafee bin Mortaza in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League, country’s lone franchise-based T20 tournament.

Sylhet Strikers captain Mashrafe bin Mortaza is unlikely to feature in the rest of the Bangladesh Premier League as he decided to take a break and join his responsibility as the Whip in the Parliament.

Mashrafe, the 40-year-old cricketer, who has already passed his prime time, featured in Sylhet’s all five games in the tournament so far where he scored only eight runs in three innings and took only one wicket that came in his first ball in the competition. He only bowled 7.3 overs in three games where he bowled and opted not to bowl in two matches as well. Mashrafe’s such performance also hurt current runners-up Sylhet in the tournament as they lost five consecutive games to remain at the bottom in the seven-team points table.

In the absence of Mashrafe, Sylhet’s vice-captain Mohammad Mithun will be the captain of the team, the press release said further.

“I was surprised that Shanto wasn’t given the captaincy. Mashrafe is one of our finest leaders. In the Sylhet team, I had hoped that since Shanto is the current captain of the Bangladesh team, it would have been better for Shanto to lead Sylhet as well. That’s what I would have expected. I understand that Mashrafe is like that. He also provides opportunities to young players,” Mahmud told reporters at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium on Thursday.

“I’m not sure why Mashrafe was chosen as the captain. It’s not because Mashrafe can’t play since he’s retired. But Shanto is currently a national team cricketer and has captained the team in Shakib’s absence, so he could have been entrusted with the leadership role. However, it’s a matter for the franchise. They may have more confidence in Mashrafe. I would have considered Shanto” he added.

Shanto led Bangladesh to a T20I series draw, winning a match on a fairly successful recent tour against New Zealand. After that, Bangladesh also won an ODI there. Captain Shanto also led Bangladesh to secure a test win against the Kiwis at home
