India Secures No.1 Ranking in All Formats Following Historic ODI Victory

India has secured the top spot in the MRF Tyres Men’s ODI Team Rankings, achieving a rare feat in the history of rankings across all formats after their notable victory against Australia.

Following their win in the first ODI, India (116 rating points) has now surpassed arch-rivals Pakistan (115) to claim the No.1 position in the rankings. This victory has placed India ahead in the ODI rankings, previously occupied by Pakistan, with a narrow gap of just one rating point.

Australia, despite remaining in third place, saw a decline in their rating points, slipping to 111 after the recent defeat to India.

India’s ascent to the top of the ODI rankings consolidates their dominance across all formats, as they already hold the No.1 position in Tests and T20Is.

The recent five-wicket victory against Australia was a commendable performance by the Indian team. Mohammed Shami’s exceptional five-wicket haul during Australia’s innings set the stage for India’s win, after stand-in skipper KL Rahul chose to field first.

India’s response was strong, with Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad contributing half-centuries in a crucial 142-run opening partnership. Despite some quick dismissals, valuable fifties from Rahul and Surykumar Yadav steered the team towards victory.

The pursuit of the top spot in the ODI Team Rankings has been intensely competitive among India, Pakistan, and Australia, especially during recent events like the Asia Cup and Australia’s ODI series against South Africa.

Although Pakistan managed to retain their No.1 position despite missing out on the Asia Cup Final, both India and Australia had opportunities to claim the top spot in ODIs during these events but faced setbacks in crucial matches.

With Australia’s defeat against India, their chances of becoming the No.1 team before the World Cup have diminished. Meanwhile, Pakistan still holds a slim chance to reclaim the top position if Australia manages to win the remaining two matches.

India now stands in a commanding position, with the possibility of securing the top spot in the ODI rankings by winning the ongoing series. This achievement adds to their dominance across all formats, making them only the second team in men’s cricket history to hold the No.1 ranking in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is simultaneously. South Africa was the first team to accomplish this milestone back in August 2012.
