Charith Asalanka to Lead Sri Lanka against T20 World Champion India

Despite being a consistent performer in all formats, Sri Lankan Cricket has experienced some ups and downs over the last few years. The last blow was their early elimination in the T20 World Cup 2024, which made reconstructing the team urgent for upcoming events. With the resignation of Wanindu Hasaranga, a new, talented one for the shorter format became obvious; and then comes the announcement of 27-year-old Asalanka to captain Sri Lanka in T20 format only, where the first challenge will be the home series against India, the current T20 World Cup champion!

While the job sounds challenging, the new captain has a huge opportunity to please the board and fans by performing extraordinarily against the “Men in Blue”.

A Quick Look at the New Skipper’s Profile

Charith Asalanka, the new captain, has been showing an impressive journey since his debut in 2021. As of today, he has played 47 international T20 matches, scoring 1061 runs with an average of 25.26. He also has five crucial half-centuries in this format.

Asalanka has performed decently in the ODI format, scoring 1918 runs in 59 matches with an average of 43.59, impressive considering the format. The aggressive nature of his batting style has made him a regular choice in shorter versions, and as a captain, the responsibility has now become even more significant.

Apart from his international career, his leadership skills got the attention during the LPL 2024, where he captained Jaffna Kings and made this team champion again. He is also lively and has a firm understanding of the format, so he is now expected to make some positive changes in the direction of Sri Lankan cricket.

Challenges Ahead of Charith Asalanka

According to many cricket experts, Charith Asalanka is the “Crisis Man” in Sri Lanka. He batted in the No. 3 position and was then sent to No. 5 to use his stroke-making ability to finish the innings. Many times, he has shown his brilliance to save Sri Lanka from falling, and this is what every Sri Lanka fan is now expecting from him.

But the first challenge is probably keeping his batting form and handling the pressure of captaincy. Not every Sri Lankan player is in good form, and Asalanka needs to perform at his best to ensure their expected comeback. While captaining, the pressure comes from all directions, from on-field to off-field. As a cricket-loving nation, the media will monitor him at every moment and question his every failure. This may make his job even more challenging since the team is not in good shape.

While discussing the current situation of Sri Lankan cricket, the new skipper has an opportunity to achieve something for Sri Lanka. If he can unite the team and bring out the best in everyone in the squad, a positive result will likely come! Charith Asalanka is a young star with over three years of international experience. Therefore, excitement and motivation are supposed to direct him in the right direction.

Series against India: The First Assignment of New Leader

Sri Lanka is set to kick off their first international appearance after the miserable T20 World Cup with the three-match series against India starting on 27th July 2024. Let’s see the Schedule of the matches:

1st Match:

Date: 27th July, 2024

2nd Match:

Date: 28th July, 2024

3rd Match:

Date: 30th July, 2024

All the games will be played at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium.

New Beginning for Both Teams?

While it’s a new chapter for Sri Lanka with a new captain, the series is a new beginning for India as well because Rahit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja are gone after they retire from the T20 format.

Besides, this is also the first series for Gautam Gambhir after being appointed as India’s national team coach following the retirement of Rahul Dravid. It is mentioned that Sri Lanka is also going for a new coach, and Sanath Jayasuriya, the legendary batter of Sri Lanka, is acting as an interim coach.

Another Comfortable Series Win for India?

India is in tremendous form. They have just ended their long trophy drought with the T20 World Cup 2024. The young yet experienced side has conquered the most formidable challenge in North America, where Sri Lanka couldn’t even make it to the next round.

Under such a scenario, every cricket expert understands that India is the favorite in this series despite being the visitors. The condition is also not unknown to them as both are South Asian countries.

Hope for Sri Lanka to Color the Journey of Asalnka

Yet, considering their records, these two sides have met so many times, and their strengths are very similar. These two teams have faced 29 times each in the T20 format, where Sri Lanka has won 9 times, India has made it nine times, and one has ended without any result. Sri Lanka is also a former T20 champion, where they defeated India in the final back in 2014. This is an excellent chance for Sri Lanka to dominate mighty India, taking advantage of home conditions and the charm of the new captain! An interesting fact is that the Sri Lankans are used to playing Indians in IPL, whereas the Indians are not so in LPL since they are not allowed to participate in any other franchise leagues.

Thus, Charith Asalanka should be confident about his new start. As he said in his initial reaction that his role would be like “man management” and was urged to bring the best out of the players, just like they did in the LPL, he must hold his nerve and lead the team from the front.

Some Final Thoughts

Interestingly, the women’s cricket team of Sri Lanka is also going to face India in the Asia Cup final on Sunday. They are expecting a win to keep the Asia Cup at home! The country has been challenged by political and economic turmoil but now looks stable. Some good news from cricket will surely boost the morale of the Sri Lankan people to regain everything they have lost so far. Now, Sri Lankan cricket fans are waiting to witness the beginning of a new history with the captaincy of Charith Asalanka, the young star with total energy!
