BPL 2024: Dhaka’s Playoff Aspirations Dashed As Historic Losing Streak Concludes
Durdanto Dhaka has set an unfortunate record in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), enduring a series of eight consecutive losses — the lengthiest losing streak witnessed in the league’s history.
Their eighth successive defeat, this time against Fortune Barishal, has effectively dashed their hopes of making it to the playoffs.
In the first innings, Fortune Barishal put up a formidable total of 189/4. Notable half-centuries from Soumya Sarkar and Mahmudullah Riyad enabled them to set a challenging target that proved too difficult for Dhaka to chase down.
Dhaka’s pursuit faltered early on, losing both their openers within the powerplay period. While Alex Ross provided some resistance with a half-century, Barishal’s bowlers consistently made breakthroughs.
Leading Barishal’s bowling attack, Mohammad Saifuddin claimed three wickets, supported by Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Obed McCoy, who each grabbed two wickets. With a defeat margin of 40 runs, Dhaka’s playoff hopes have been officially extinguished, as their remaining three matches cannot salvage their chances.
The BPL action will now shift to Chattogram before returning to Dhaka for the final phase.
Currently, Rangpur Riders lead the table with 12 points, closely followed by Comilla Victorians and Chattogram Challengers, both with 10 points each. Fortune Barishal holds the fourth position with eight points.
