Bangladesh Remains Confident Despite Sri Lanka’s Dominance on Day 2

Despite Sri Lanka’s formidable total of 531 runs in the first innings, Bangladesh’s batting coach, David Hemp, expressed confidence that his team would continue to push for a win in Chhatogram.

Sri Lanka’s impressive batting display saw them amass 531 runs without a centurion, with six batters contributing half-centuries. In response, Bangladesh ended day two at 55 for 1, trailing by 476 runs. Opener Zakir Hasan remained unbeaten on 28 alongside nightwatchman Taijul Islam after Lahiru Kumara dismissed Mahmudul Hasan Joy for 21.

Hemp emphasized Bangladesh’s determination to pursue victory despite the challenging situation. “We are still thinking about winning the game. It might seem a bit bizarre considering we are 480 runs behind,” he said. “The key will be to negotiate tomorrow. If we do that well, then we negotiate the day after. If we do that, from a batting point of view, you never know what can happen.”

Regarding the challenge of facing the new ball, Hemp highlighted the importance of mental preparation and strategy. “The new ball is a threat. Players practice a lot against it in the nets. It is just continuous preparation,” he explained. “Getting your head around it is the most important thing.”

Meanwhile, Sri Lankan batsman Kamindu Mendis, who missed out on a century, emphasized the significance of the team’s collective effort in posting a score over 500. “More than getting my century, the important thing was to score over 500,” said Mendis. “When you bat at No 7 or 8, you have to trust the tail-enders. I think I did that. They did a good job supporting me.”

Despite the absence of individual centuries, Mendis highlighted the value of the team’s overall contribution. “We have six half-centuries in our first innings. It is still a good contribution for the team. We put a 500-plus total on the board. I think we fulfilled our plan,” he concluded.
